After numerous days with lots of partying and joy at Samfunnet in Ås, it was time to take it down some levels in form of a more serious International celebration day in Ås kulturhus, Saturday afternoon. International celebration day is a family arrangement, and a collaboration between Ås international culture centre, the Culture school in Ås, miniUKA, Ås culture house, Refugees Welcome to Ås and Bjørnebekk asylum centre.
There has been an impressing amount of different activities during the day: choir song from Ås children- and youth choir and Sangkoret Noe Ganske Annet, various bands and groups, workshops with joik and beatboxing, dancing from the group «Shqiponjat», clothing exchange, photography exhibitions and facial painting for children.
The theme for this year’s celebration day was “Song and fellowship”. Ås commune is a diverse cultural commune who has received refugees from different places. The nice thing about music, is that you can communicate no matter language or culture, and it can be used as a link to unite people with different backgrounds. In addition to the tragic faith many people on the run experience, this day focuses on that there after all reminds hope and joy in all this misery. The photography exhibition “Øyeblikk av Gleder Nordover!” together with dimmed and evocative music makes a nice picture and time for reflection. Probably not the funnies arrangement during this miniUKA, but among the most important.
